KAUFMAN (1080 KRLD) - The SPCA of Texas is caring for 452 rabbits at its Dealey Animal Rescue Center after rescuing the animals from a property in Kaufman County.
The owner voluntarily agreed to surrender the animals this week.
Investigators visited the property on Monday after getting a tip that the rabbits were being kept in terrible conditions. They found hundreds of rabbits housed in crates inside a barn. Many of the crates contained more than one animal and the crates were stacked up to four high.
The SPCA says the crates were also filled with feces, hair and dirt.
The animals had numerous medical problems including missing eyes, missing ears, wounds, missing hair and injured limbs.
The SPCA investigator gave the owner information about complying with the Texas Health and Safety Code. When they returned on Wednesday, the owner agreed to surrender the animals. They are now being housed at the SPCA's rescue facility while they receive medical treatment.
The SPCA hopes to eventually place the animals in new homes.
