HUTCHINS (KRLD) - Hutchins police are tracking down a group of people they say are stealing cars and selling them back with fake titles.
Police say they know of seven cars that have been stolen and then sold back. Officers say the suspects are contacting different wreckers and getting them to take newer model cars from auctions. They contact the wreckers using apps that are hard to trace. The cars are then turned around and sold back on Craigslist or similar sites.
Police say a person buys the car, often using cash to do so. When they go to register it, they find that the titles are fake and the car was stolen. Police say not only have these victims lost out on a car, they’ve lost tens of thousands of dollars in cash too.
It appears the suspects are mostly targeting Spanish speaking victims. However, police say no one has gotten in trouble yet for buying one of these stolen cars.
Authorities released two pictures of a man (in the photo above) they say is involved in the series of thefts. The subject is described as a middle-aged man, approximately 6-feet tall, weighing approximately 190-215 pounds, and is of Hispanic descent.
