Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald

DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A Dallas County Associate Judge Monica Purdy today ruled former Fort Worth police chief Joel Fitzgerald will get to inspect city documents and question city officials in his whistle-blower lawsuit.

However, the number of documents and the scope of the questioning has been limited.

In court documents Fitzgerald says he was fired as the city's police chief May 20, 2019, about an hour before he was to meet with the FBI over an investigation into corruption at Fort Worth City hall, he claims in his suit.

Court documents say the former chief intended to arrest two high-ranking Fort Worth city officials for destroying documents that concerned access to a federal crime database.

Fitzgerald says he was escorted out of the building and, ever since, he has not been given access to his calendar and other documents needed to help prove his case.

In today's ruling, Purdy is giving Fitzgerald access to many of the documents he is seeking. She also ordered depositions of Fort Worth city manager Dave Cook, assistant city manager Jay Chapa, and Fort Worth Police Officers Association President Manny Ramirez.

However, the judge is limiting the questions that Fitzgerald's lawyers can ask.
