FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Fort Worth police say they have arrested a man who tried to avoid jail, by swimming away from officers.

While trying to serve two felony warrants for theft, police say a man in his 30s took off on foot and ran towards the Trinity River.

Officer Buddy Calzata says the suspect then jumped in the river and tried to swim away. After almost an hour, they located the suspect and sent a boat in after him.

"He started to push away from the bank, and was actually trying to swim across the river to get away from the boat. But after he got about 10 feet away from the bank, he started yelling for help," Calzata says.

The suspect was pulled on the boat and taken to the hospital. He was treated and taken to jail.
