MAYPEARL (1080 KRLD) - The Maypearl City Council will meet Monday evening to appoint someone to serve as mayor.
Voters in the Ellis County town elected Phillip Veltman May 4, even though he had passed away in March.
Veltman was born January 16, 1948 in Huntington, Indiana, southwest of Fort Wayne. He moved to Dallas and graduated from Kimball High School in 1966 and Dallas Baptist University, then Dallas Baptist College, in 1970.
Veltman moved to Maypearl in 1990 and was running for mayor when he died from leukemia March 15.
The city clerk said the deadline had passed to change the ballot, so his name would remain.
A total of 110 people voted in the election May 4. Veltman received 68 votes. John Pruitt received just 42 votes. Pruitt had served two earlier terms as mayor.
The Maypearl City Council will swear in three members at its meeting Monday evening. Veltman was scheduled to be sworn in as well; now, the city council will appoint someone to serve his term.
