MIDLOTHIAN (1080 KRLD) - The Midlothian Animal Shelter admitted a dog on Wednesday that was carrying the canine parvovirus.
That virus affects a dog's ability to absorb nutrients, causing it to become dehydrated. Symptoms include severe diarrhea, anorexia, weight loss, vomiting and fever.
Most dogs are usually receive a series of vaccinations between six weeks old and after ten weeks old.
The dog that was submitted to the shelter on Wednesday was a stray.
Protocol calls for the shelter to stop the intake of new animals or the adoption of animals for two weeks. The objective is to isolate doges that are currently in the shelter to prevent the spread of the virus.
That protocol will remain in effect at the Midlothian Animal Shelter through July 17th.
