FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Fort Worth-based American Airlines will begin requiring its flight attendants to wear personal protective masks while on-duty beginning May 1st.
It's one of several steps the airline is taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on its flights.
In early May, American will also begin distributing face masks and sanitizing wipes or gels to passengers. Their goal is to have those available on all flights as conditions allow.
"We are looking out for our customers' well-being to give them peace of mind while they travel with us," said Kurt Stache, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience. "We're moving quickly on these enhancements and we'll continue to improve the travel experience for our customers and team members as we navigate these times together."
American is also stepping up its cleaning procedures on each of its aircraft.
Cleaning crews will use a disinfectant and will target high-contact areas like tray tables, seatbelt buckles, armrests, window shades and seat back screens. The enhanced cleaning will also apply to door and overhead bin handles.
