FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - A one-year-old child appears to be okay after the car the toddler was in was stolen at around 7:45 this morning from in front of an east Fort Worth home.
"The vehicle was left running with a one-year-old in the back," says Fort Worth Ofc. Brad Perez.
Police found the car at a nearby apartment complex about a half-hour later; and around that same time, they were alerted to the location of the child.
"A phone call came in from a local church," says Perez, "where they stated that a toddler had just been dropped off at that location, which happened to be the same toddler that was in the back of the vehicle."
The child is expected to be okay.
Police found the suspected thief near a creek not too far away and took him into custody.
Perez says this time of year, it's not uncommon for thieves to drive off in cars left running while unattended.
He says leaving a car while running unattended is inviting trouble.
"All it takes is someone looking at your exhaust," says Perez. "If they see the exhaust in the cold weather, then they can tell the vehicle is running.
"It can be seen from a distance away," Perez continues, "and all they've got to do is approach to see nobody sitting inside, try the door, and next thing you know they're gone with your vehicle."
