Dallas Police Chief Rejects Calls for Resignation, Defunding Police

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall

Several hundred demonstrators marched through Downtown Dallas for the third straight weekend to protest the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis May 25. The protest Sunday went from Klyde Warren Park, through downtown, ending in the Dallas City Hall Plaza.

Some demonstrators called for Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall to resign; others wanted funding for police to be shifted to social programs.

"The city needs the police," Hall said. "Are there things that need to be done? Yes, there are, but defunding the police is not the answer."

Hall said Dallas police are still reviewing video of the protest in front of the Crowley Courts Building June 1 where hundreds of people then blocked traffic on Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge. Several hundred people were detained but not charged.

Hall's speech before the crowd was cut short by demonstrators saying she should resign, but she said afterward she would not leave the department.

"I'm not angry that they're angry. I feel the pain they feel, and I understand," she said.

Hall told demonstrators she is looking at potential changes and has already made changes that aim to build stronger partnerships with community groups.

"We are, as a police agency, willing to make the necessary changes in order for us to move forward and be a better agency," Hall says. "21st century policing for the City of Dallas is not new."
