DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- One of the most well-known Dallas police officers has died.
Jim Leavelle died yesterday at the age of 99. Leavelle is seen in one of the most iconic photographs from the JFK assassination.
The Sunday following the shooting, Leavelle and some other Dallas policemen were escorting a handcuffed Lee Oswald out of the old Dallas police headquarters. Suddenly, Jack Ruby emerged from the shadows and fatally shot Oswald.
That famous photograph shows Oswald grimacing in pain while Leavelle -- in his cream-colored suit and Stetson -- recoils in shock from the sound of the gunshot and the sight of of Ruby's revolver only feet away.
The photograph earned the Pulitzer Prize for Dallas Times-Herald photographer Bob Jackson.
