DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The drive-through coronavirus testing sites in Dallas are now using a new self-swab test.
It is replacing the nasopharyngeal swab previously used by medical personnel at the testing sites outside the American Airlines Center and the Ellis Davis Field House.
"They were using nasopharyngeal swabs, which is a method for collecting a sample of nasal secretions from the back of the nose and throat," said Incident Commander Randall Payton. "It requires a deeper entry as it goes through the nose first and basically to the back of your throat."
The new self-swab tests are easier to administer and do not require medical personnel. " It only enters and collects from the middle of the nasal cavity. It's less invasive and it's safer for both patients and health care providers," said Payton. "It requires less PPE usage and it actually lets the individual perform the swab themselves."
The two testing sites will have medical personnel available to help patients who need it.
There will also be a video presentation on how to properly administer the self-swab tests.
