DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A former Dallas police officer is in court today for his trial in connection with the shooting death of a woman three years ago.

42-year old Christopher Hess is facing trial for aggravated assault by a public servant for firing more than a dozen shots into a car, killing a woman.

The shooting happened near I-30 and Munger in January of 2017.

21-year old Genevive Dawes was killed, a man in her car survived.

A second officer fired one shot, he was not indicted. Police reports say officers thought the car was stolen.

Hess claimed he thought he was in jeopardy because Dawes had backed into his squad car.

Hess was fired by the Dallas Police Department following an investigation.
