The body of George Floyd arrived in Houston Saturday night. His family says he landed at Bush Intercontinental and had a police escort to the funeral home in South Houston, about 40 miles away.

Several demonstrations took place this weekend across Houston. Downtown, a group of people walked from the George R. Brown Convention Center to Houston City Hall and back Sunday afternoon.


"We need fundamental change," one woman said. "This problem has been here as long as America has been alive. We need real, systemic, fundamental change."

Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia, a former sheriff, spoke at a demonstration outside a school in Pasadena, just southwest of Houston.

"We've had protests in the past," he says. "I've really committed my professional career to trying to change law enforcement from the inside out. I think I've made some contribution to that mission, but the fact we've had another death and the fact that death has incensed the nation, that tells me whatever progress we've made is not enough."

He says additional progress must involve "the community being the architect for whatever policies we need to bring to the table."

A public memorial is scheduled from 12 p.m.-6 p.m. Monday at Fountain of Praise Church in South Houston. People will be required to park at one of two other churches and take a shuttle bus to the church for traffic control.

Because of COVID-19, anyone attending the visitation will be required to wear gloves and a face mask. Only 15 people will be allowed inside the church at a time, and people will only be allowed to stay inside for ten minutes.

Tuesday, Al Sharpton plans to deliver the eulogy at Floyd's funeral. The mayor of Houston plans to attend along with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Congressman Al Green. Boxer Floyd Mayweather offered to pay for the service and plans to attend as well.

The service Tuesday is closed to the public but will be streamed at https://www.tfop.org​.

Floyd will be buried in Pearland next to his mother.
