DALLAS (KRLD) - After the deadliest month in Dallas in more than two decades, Gov. Greg Abbott is sending in reinforcements.

Acting on a request from Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall, Gov. Abbott announced Friday he has directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to provide direct support to Dallas PD in its efforts to reduce violent crime.

Gov. Abbott said, "As Governor, my first priority will always be the safety of all Texans.  The Dallas Police Department is committed to doing all they can to crack down on criminal activity, and Texas will dedicate whatever resources are needed to help keep our communities safe."

DPS will work with the Dallas Police Department, the Dallas County District Attorney, the U.S. Attorney's office and other law enforcement partners to enhance the safety and security of Dallas communities.

The governor's office said DPS will deploy additional Troopers, Special Agents, aviation personnel and aircraft and other resources to help combat the recent surge in Dallas crime.  In addition, the Texas Rangers will provide Dallas PD with investigative support for homicides.

Dallas reported 41 homicides in May 2019, the highest monthly total for the city since the 1990s.
