DALLAS (KRLD) - Employees at the Home Depot near 75 and Forest Lane cannot return to work, so they have gone to work in the community. The tornado that hit North Dallas and Preston Hollow tore the roof off the store and damaged the building.
Employees say manager Jordan Jasper saw reports of severe weather and ordered everyone out about 30 minutes before the tornado hit.
"This is the gentleman that helped get every associate out safely prior to the storm," one employee said to NBC 5.
The Home Depot Foundation now says 500 employees from different stores have fanned out into areas hit by the tornado with supplies to help people start to rebuild.
"Rakes, shovels, brooms, it doesn't matter," Jasper, the manager, says. "If it's our two hands, we'll do that. We'll pick up anything we can, and get it out of the way so these guys can get moving on with the rest of their lives."
Jasper says employees at the store in North Dallas cannot clock in or return to work, so they volunteered to help people who live and work nearby.
"We work until we can't work anymore," he says. "Our store got impacted pretty quickly, but this neighborhood got hit just as hard."
