MANSFIELD (1080 KRLD) - This morning, around  2,700 high school seniors in the Mansfield ISD woke up to a surprise: spirit signs, sneaked into their front lawns early this morning by school officials and volunteers.

Mansfield ISD Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Cantu says so many people wanted to volunteer for the special project, school officials almost had to start turning people away. She says a lot of people want to help make the end of the year special for graduating seniors ... and she says that's the way it should be.

"It's important for all of us to think back on our senior year and how important that time was for us," Dr. Cantu says. "Some of those experiences (2020 graduates) aren't necessarily going to experience firsthand. So it's important for all of us to think about different things we can do and ways we can make their senior year special."

Through a communitywide blitz of volunteers, more than 2,700 Mansfield ISD seniors woke up this morning to these yard signs of support! Class of 2020 seniors, you’re not forgotten. You are very loved & missed. ❤️ Share your pics with us! #WeAreMISD #OneTeamOneDream pic.twitter.com/Jx5CjejhUg

Dr. Cantu says she hopes the students were delighted to wake up and find the spirit signs in their yards. Each says "Class of 2020 Senior" and has the name of their specific school, as well as their school's motto, proudly displayed on the front.

The signs are meant to serve as a reminder that even though they're separated, graduating seniors aren't celebrating alone.

"It might be different, but it can be equally as special," Dr. Cantu says. "It's kind of on us, as former seniors ... to think about that and come up with ways to make it special for them."

Dr. Cantu says over 100 volunteers got together this morning to deliver the signs. She says even though they’re not getting the celebration they thought they were ... she still wants seniors to feel special.
