Kroger is winning the grocery price war with the lowest overall cost for store-brand essentials, according to a new comparison study.
The Ohio-based chain’s basket of 15 basic items came in at $30, undercutting Walmart, Aldi and Albertsons as inflation-weary shoppers search for relief at the checkout. The study by Restaurant Furniture Plus, reported by Southern Living, highlights Kroger’s edge on staples like milk, bread, eggs, chicken breast, spaghetti, canned beans and baking supplies.
Kroger offered the lowest price on 10 of the 15 items, more than any other retailer in the survey. Walmart finished second at $30.95, followed by Aldi at $33.15 and Albertsons at $35.58. While Aldi stood out for dairy values, Kroger’s overall affordability gave it the top spot.
The findings come as grocery prices remain a top concern for North Texas families. Food costs have climbed significantly in recent years, pushing many households to stretch budgets with store brands and careful shopping. Local Kroger stores, including those under the Kroger, Tom Thumb and other banners in the region, may offer a practical option for DFW shoppers facing high prices.
Kroger operates more than 1,200 stores across 16 states and has emphasized value through its loyalty program, digital coupons and private-label products. The chain has faced its own challenges, including proposed mergers and labor issues, but continues to compete aggressively on price.
For Dallas-Fort Worth residents, the study provides timely guidance amid ongoing economic pressures. Experts recommend comparing unit prices and taking advantage of sales and rewards programs regardless of the chain. Smaller basket comparisons like this one offer a snapshot rather than a full weekly shopping list, but they help highlight competitive pricing on everyday items.
Shoppers are encouraged to check current prices in-store or via apps, as promotions can shift weekly. The broader trend shows continued competition among major grocers to win value-conscious customers in a high-inflation environment.
