Officials with the Mesquite ISD are clearing the air, literally.
The Mesquite ISD school board just approved the installation of an air purifying system officials say will pay off for years to come.
With less than a week before students return to campus, the district is installing Global Plasma Solutions on every one of its HVAC units.
According to Mesquite ISD, HVAC systems help maintain healthy indoor environments in public facilities by replenishing oxygen and controlling the removal of moisture, airborne bacteria, and carbon dioxide. Om top of that, Superintendent Dr. David Vroonland says Global Plasma Solutions achieved a reduction of COVID-19 surface strain within 30 minutes in independent studies.
"We started investigating what we could do to really battle this from a science standpoint," Vroonland says. "What can we do in terms of science to destroy this virus in the air?"
The GPS installment process started this week, beginning with the elementary schools, then moving to middle and high school campuses. In all, around 5,000 units are expected to be up and running by the end of October.
The system is costing the district $7.5 million, money Vroonland says is well spent.
