DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - More than 3,000 non-profits are participating in North Texas Giving Day, which is taking place Thursday, September 19.
Last year, Communities Foundation of Texas says about 2,700 non-profits participated, and people donated about $48 million.
"I'll tell you, one of the most enjoyable things I do is get a chance to read what a difference it made for them," says Communities Foundation of Texas CEO Dave Scullin. "In some cases, they were able to keep employees they wouldn't otherwise."
This year, 3,050 non-profits have signed up for North Texas Giving Day.
"We have deep connections in this community across multiple counties," Scullin says. "We already know many of the non-profits, and we send out a communication on various sources saying it's time to register."
This year, Dirk Nowitzki and his wife are serving as honorary chairs.
"Jessica and I are thrilled to be this year's honorary chairs of North Texas Giving Day," Nowitzki wrote in a statement. "The North Texas community has given so much to me and my family over the last 21 years, and we can’t think of a better way to get involved in the community that has supported me on and off the court."
Scullin says he hopes to top 100,000 individual donors this year. That would be a 20 percent increase.
"After the event is over, we'll actually hold sessions to say, 'How do you keep some of the new donors you have?' That is a huge thing for them," Scullin says.
