FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Six homeless people are safe after a fire erupted at an abandoned Fort Worth church this morning.

About 3:00 a.m. 911 operators took a call from a panicky woman screaming she could not breathe. Firefighters arrived to an old church building on Fogg Street in south Fort Worth. They found one man had escaped on his own but five others were trapped by the flames and smoke.

Using ladders, firefighters forced their way onto the second floor where they rescued all five.

Everyone was checked out at the scene and it seemed no one was seriously hurt.

Investigators believe the fire was ignited as the homeless were trying to keep warm.
