Southeast Texas Woman Grateful to have her Mom Back

A Montgomery County woman recounts ten of the worst days of her life.

Laura Bereta's truck was running in the driveway of her home in Porter. She had her back turned when her 62-year-old mother hopped in and took off. Linda Field has dementia.

She was found ten days later, late last month deep in the woods near the tiny San Jacinto County town of Coldspring, more than  40 miles away.

As to how she survived, Bereta says "she swears up and down she didn't eat nothing. Detectives think maybe she ate minnows and drank creek water."

Bereta's pickup had been abandoned at a dead end on some private property. It had a broken side mirror and scratches and was reported by a property owner. Field was rescued a few hours later by search crews and dogs.

On their Facebook page, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice wrote a K-9 team out of the Wynne Unit helped track Field down and found her near a creek bed, about a mile into the woods.

Bereta says deputies told her her mom had been in the woods for at least a week. She says it could have been worse.

"There was no telling if she was going to try to go back to Montana because that's where we're from. That was my last resort because I tried everything that she spoke of, where she could have possibly went. Everything was a dead end."

She says she spent a few sleepless nights during the ordeal.

"When I finally got to hear her voice, confirmation wise, I burst out in tears."

Bereta, who is the sole caretaker,  says her mom was dehydrated and covered with bug bites but physically should be okay.
