DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Dallas ISD will no longer allow bags, purses or backpacks at basketball games as a result of Saturday night's shooting at Ellis Davis Field House.

South Oak Cliff High School was playing Kimball High School at the arena when people started arguing in the stands.

"Fisticuffs turned into gun violence," says Superintendent Michael Hinojosa.

A 15-year-old boy turned himself in at Dallas police headquarters after the shooting. Dallas ISD says an 18-year-old man was shot and a Dallas ISD police officer was grazed by a bullet and is recovering.

Hinojosa says the officer will be okay, but the 18 year old was injured "very significantly."

"I want to be very clear: Please do not blame [South Oak Cliff> and please do not blame Kimball," he says. "This was totally out of their control. We encourage kids to be there. It wasn't just the players. You saw the video. We saw players scrambling; we saw parents scrambling."

He says about 650 people were in the arena at the time. Hinojosa says the shooting was the result of a disagreement that started outside the school, but the district has a responsibility because "it happened on our watch."

As a result, he says Dallas ISD will no longer allow bags, backpacks or purses at basketball games. Hinojosa says a task force will also look at how to screen for weapons. He says details will be released in the next couple of days.

"We need to have a task force," Hinojosa says. "As the mayor has taken this matter seriously, as our police chief has taken this matter seriously, then we, too, need to do that."

Dallas police say they have found no evidence the shooting was gang related. The 15 year old has been charged with aggravated assault.

The basketball game was rescheduled to resume at 2 p.m. Monday, but only students and parents will be allowed to attend. Hinojosa says the 18 year old had withdrawn from Dallas schools and was going to a charter school. Dallas police have not released the identity of the suspect.
