The state's bigamy laws helped prosecutors get longer prison terms for sex offenders.
A few years back prosecutors noticed some language in some revamped bigamy law - wording that allowed them to ask for greater penalties when a man was married, but sexually assaulting a family member.
Bigamy didn't actually have to be taking place.
The law was used to land a life in prison term for Michael Senn of Fort Worth.
"The enhancement gives us a tool in cases to enhance punishment for someone like Senn and others where we have used this enhancement" said Tarrant County prosecutor Helena Faulkner. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has upheld Senn's case along with a number of similar claims from around Texas.
