AUSTIN (1080 KRLD) - The Texas Department of Insurance is warning you of a phone scam.
"We have received notice of some kind of entity — I don't know whether to call it a company or not — that’s calling people and offering to help them find a better deal on auto insurance," says Jerry Hagins, TDI spokesman.
Hagins says the line of questioning is especially concerning.
"They're asking for information about the person's present insurance ... personal information such as your birth date, bank account, Social Security number and things like that," says Hagins. "We always want to be cautious when we're called or approached by someone that we did not intend to talk to. And then when they ask for personal information, that's a real red flag."
Hagins says when in doubt, there is a question you should ask right away.
"You can ask them for their license number — to sell insurance in Texas you have to be licensed to do that," Hagins says. "So if they have trouble giving you a number, I would just hang up."
