Texas is getting more than $18 million to help stop violence against women.
The Justice Department’s Office of Violence Against Women announced the grant money today.
There has been a spike in domestic violence during the pandemic leaving many women unsafe in their own homes.
Nearly $12 million of the grant will be used to support the police and the courts that arrest and prosecute abusers.
About $3 million will go to organizations that provide legal services for victims, and just over half a million dollars will help provide more transitional housing for women who are escaping their abusers.
