MESQUITE (KRLD) - The scorching temperatures can quickly overheat your pet and cause them to become dehydrated.
Jeanne Saadi with Mesquite Animal Services says walking your pet on pavement could be dangerous.
Saadi says, "They are walking with bare feet. The pads of their paws can burn. So, before you take your dog for a walk put your hand on the ground. If you can't hold it there for ten seconds, then it's too hot for your dog to walk."
She suggests walking pets in the morning before it's hot or after it's cooled off in the evening.
She says signs of heatstroke include: heavy panting, glazed eyes, and difficulty breathing.
Saadi says, "If they are doing this, don't pour cold water over them. Instead, bring them inside and put a cool wet towel beneath them. Also, get them to the vet as soon as possible."
