Two firefighters were injured Wednesday morning at a house fire in East Fort Worth.

Officials say the fire started around 5:15 a.m. at a vacant house in the 2900 block of Milam Street, east of East Loop 820 and north of Lake Arlington.

One firefighter suffered burns to his legs when he entered the home. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition and should recover.

Then a second firefighter was injured when part of the roof collapsed.

Fort Worth Fire's Mike Drivdahl says that firefighter was trapped and made a "mayday" call.

"That is the worst situation for us, when one of our firefighters, one of our brothers or sisters is in a situation they can't get out of," Drivdahl says. "We're going to do everything we possibly can to find them, rescue them, pull them out and make sure they're safe."

Drivdahl says the second firefighter was rescued and treated at the scene for bumps and bruises.

"I don't ever like to use the word, 'lucky.' We weren't lucky this morning. We were well-trained," he says. "We are fortunate it wasn't worse, but because we are well-trained, because our firefighters do a fantastic job, everybody's going to go home after this shift."

No one else was hurt. The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

Early this morning crews responded to a residential fire on Milam and Craig St. When they arrived the home was heavily involved in fire. One FF sustained burn injuries during the fire attack and was transported in stable condition. Later in the incident a mayday (emergency) was called due to a roof collapse that trapped a FF. Crews were able to quickly make a rescue and that FF was evaluated for minor injuries. Investigators will remain on scene.
