FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - A man who killed another man while driving the wrong way was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday.

In January of 2018, Cesar Romero, 32, killed Moses Elizondo, 21.

"The defendant was going northbound in the southbound lanes of 820 on the west side of Fort Worth," says Tarrant County Prosecutor Lloyd Whelchel, "and at the intersection of 820 and I-30, he hit our victim head-on."

This past September, Romero pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter; and on Tuesday, Judge Wayne Salvant passed sentence.

"Judge Salvant sentenced him to 20 years in prison," says Whelchel.

Romero was not sober at the time of the crash.

"He was severely intoxicated," Whelchel says. "His blood-alcohol level came back to a .16 — twice the legal limit."

Romero had no prior DWI convictions.

He will have to serve at least ten years behind bars before he's eligible for parole.

Whelchel says he hopes the sentence gives Elizondo's family some sense of solace.

"We're just glad that they are finally getting some measure of justice and maybe they can start putting this behind them so they can move on," he says.
