Sen. Ted Cruz Proposes Constitutional Amendment For Congressional Term Limits

DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Francis Rooney (R-FL) have proposed a Constitutional amendment that would impose term limits on members of both houses of Congress, according to reports. 

The amendment, co-sponsored by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), and Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) calls for a limit of three, two-year terms in the House of Representatives and two, six-year terms in the Senate.

“For too long, members of Congress have abused their power and ignored the will of the American people,” said Cruz in a statement. “Term limits on members of Congress offer a solution to the brokenness we see in Washington, D.C. It is long past time for Congress to hold itself accountable. I urge my colleagues to submit this constitutional amendment to the states for speedy ratification.”

Cruz proposed a similar Constitutional amendment in January of 2017.

President Trump supports term-limits for members of Congress, tweeting in April of last year that he met with a bipartisan group of lawmakers and he endorsed their efforts.

“The American people support term limits by an overwhelming margin. I believe that as lawmakers, we should follow the example of our founding fathers, Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who refused to consider public service as a career" said Rooney. "Our history is replete with examples of leaders who served their country for a time and returned to private life, or who went on to serve in a different way.”
