CORPUS CHRISTI (1080 KRLD) - Two children were killed and two other people injured in a South Texas car-train collision.
DPS said that the crash happened Saturday morning in San Patricio County, just south of Mathis.
A car was heading northbound when it was struck by a westbound Union Pacific train, ejecting two passengers, a 12-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy, from the car. They were both pronounced dead at the scene. A 5-year-old girl was transported to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi in critical condition.
The driver was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. Officials believe that the driver disregarded the train crossing moments before the crash, and that the crossing did not have gates to alert drivers of a passing train.
