Texas set a record Friday for new COVID-19 cases with 2,097. This comes as we expand restaurant capacity from 50 to 75 percent. Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of tropical medicine at Baylor says the uptick in positive cases isn't just numbers from expanded testing. "It's a parallel to increased numbers of hospitalizations and ICU admissions. It's pretty obvious that something is going wrong." He says it's time to put a pause on reopenings. He would like to see how things go starting next week, If the numbers continue to climb, he would advise going back to a social distancing mode. "This is not a time to insert lots of ideology and not have the freedom caucus parading around demonstrating against contract tracing and social distancing and vaccines. This is a time they need to disappear and we've got to be thoughtful."He says the climb in cases comes from earlier phases of the state's reopening and not just increased activity over the Memorial Day holiday.
