DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A UFC legend is being investigated after abandoning a dog at Dallas Love Field.
Police were flagged down by a man on March 6, who said when he parked his car in the garage at the airport, he noticed a dog tied up in the bed of a pickup truck. When he returned from his trip two days later, the dog was still there.
It was soon learned that the truck and the dog had been there for four days.
Madeline Yeman with the SPCA says the owner of the dog turned out to be former UFC light heavyweight champion Frank Shamrock.
"Shamrock did admit to abandoning the dog at the airport before flying to California. He said it was his mothers dog and he had attempted to find a home for her, but when he couldn't, he left her at the airport," Yeman says.
Shamrock agreed to give up custody of the dog to the SPCA.
The dog is a 7-year-old lab mix named Zelda. Yeman says she was a little malnourished when taken to the shelter but was in otherwise good condition.
Yeman says Dallas police are expected to file a charge of cruelty to non livestock animals, for abandoning an animal without making reasonable arrangements for assumption of custody by another person. The charge is a class A misdemeanor.
