ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD) - UT Arlington Police are warning students about a new take on an old scam.
Police sent out a tweet warning students of emails that are being sent by someone posing as a professor, demanding payment of fees using a pre-paid gift card.
No government entity or legitimate business will ever demand immediate payment in that form.
Captian Mike McCord says unfortunately, the scammer has been successful. One victim lost $200.
Captain McCord says the campus police department constantly works to get the word out about these scams at freshman orientation and on social media.
Scam alert: official looking email from a professor seeking payment via gift card. Don't send money or personal information from anyone requesting payment immediately. Confirm any organization seeking payment prior to sending any funds/information.Stop > Think > Protect Yourself pic.twitter.com/bery4WmQBr
