The American Medical Association says more research seems to indicate smoking and vaping are linked to underlying health conditions that increase the risk of severe illness from the coronavirus.

In an interview with KRLD Thursday, AMA President Dr. Patrice Harris called for national action to reduce smoking and vaping in vulnerable communities to protect lung health and reduce the overall risk for COVID-19.

Dr. Harris said smoking is known to be a major cause of serious health conditions, including heart and lung disease and diabetes.  She said those factors may also contribute to a disproportionate impact of COVID-19 among African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and other ethnic groups.

Dr. Harris also talked with KRLD's Chris Sommer about effective ways to restart the national economy without endangering the lives of more Americans.
