Frito Lay Says Thank You To First Responders With Big Donation

First responders have the same concerns we do when it comes to fighting the coronavirus.

"The number one thing I've heard from my guys is they are concerned about taking it home," said Lt. Armando Garza, a firefighter with Dallas Fire Rescue and president of the Dallas Hispanic Firefighter's Association.

The fight against the coronavirus has been tough on everyone but especially first responders.

"I always say firefighters are just ordinary people that deal with extraordinary circumstances," Armando said. "We go through training for medical emergencies, for fires obviously, for hazardous materials but when this virus took off, frankly, we weren't prepared for it."

The department has had to adapt and adjust.

The DHFA had begun an outreach campaign to reach out to members to make sure they and their families are doing okay when they got a call from Frito-Lay.

"Frito-Lay approached us about making a donation to the department," Armando said.

The partnership was established and Frito-lay donated an 18-wheeler with more than 1200 boxes of snacks, which were distributed to all 58 fire stations in  Dallas.

Frito-lay also donated to the Dallas Police Department, Fort Worth Fire Department and Network Ministries.

Armando said it might not seem like a big thing, but it's the little things that make a big difference.

"It's invaluable to be honest with you. Sometimes we get down and we don't always take time to care for ourselves. We're just out there doing our jobs, doing what they hired us to do. But when you get back from a run, or a fire and someone says 'Hey! Frito Lay donated chips!' it puts a smile on your face and its good to know that there are people out there in the community that are still thinking about us while we are out doing what we do," Armando said.

We're proud to call Frito Lay and the Dallas Fire Department this week's KRLD Difference Makers.
