Prey for the Devil is the newest horror film to peer into the world of demons and spirits from the view of the Catholic church. Since 1973’s The Exorcist, the exorcism subgenre depicting supernatural possessions and demonic forces has become a favorite for horror fans.
The genre’s continuous rise in popularity has resulted in a multitude of exorcism-themed films over the years, making it challenging for filmmakers to write an exorcism story that stands out.
Prey for the Devil, however, manages to do just that, according to actor Christian Navarro who portrays Father Dante in the film. Navarro, most known for his role as Tony in the Netflix series '13 Reasons Why,' says the filmmakers’ decision to have a female lead the cast sets it apart from its predecessors.
“The film centers around its premise as the first female exorcist. And that alone sets it apart from the genre very realistically. The priesthood. Catholicism has traditionally been a male-oriented field, as many are, and female exorcists are not common at all,” he said.
Prey for the Devil aims to trailblaze the exorcism genre by portraying strong female characters in a horror film, led by Jacqueline Byers as Sister Ann. While some Twitter users showed disdain for the woman-led horror movie, Navarro says that this representation is important.
“I think it really reintroduces the genre to a whole new demographic. And the way that she's able to combat the forces of evil in this film, to combat the antagonist in this film is fundamentally different because she's a woman. There's a different kind of strength, a different kind of approach,” he said.
“This movie is not degrading. I think it is empowering for women, and I feel that if you’re a man and you feel like a woman being empowered takes away from your masculinity, you’re not much of a man.”
When working on the set of a movie portraying such strong spiritual entities we were curious to know if Navarro believed in paranormal behavior himself.
“I think it's a door that you can open or leave closed. I respectfully leave it closed knowing that there may be something on the other side, but I want nothing to do with it, you know. So I will never discount anyone else's experience. And I believe that there may be something metaphysical. I think the universe is very grand and we don't know all of it. So it's entirely possible. I like to live my life with that door shut.”
While Navarro chooses to keep the door shut, Prey for the Devil invites you to take a look inside.
Prey for the Devil hits theaters this Friday, October 28th.
