The Dallas Cowboys may have ended up on the wrong side of the final score over the weekend against the Jaguars, but that’s not what matters in the preseason. The preseason is about trimming down the roster and figuring out who could surprise people in the upcoming season.
Deuce Vaughn, the Cowboys’ sixth-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft, was one of the bright spots for Dallas to open the preseason. While Vaughn stands at just 5-foot-6, he has the quickness and footspeed to make defenders miss.
NFL Insider Brian Baldinger of Audacy’s original podcast “In The Huddle” was one of the many people who came away from the Cowboys’ preseason opener with high praise for Vaughn.
“You have to be impressed by Deuce Vaughn in Dallas,” Baldinger said (12:45 in player above). “He did this at Kansas State for three years. The guy can just find daylight.”
Vaughn ran for nearly 3,000 yards with 27 touchdowns in 27 games over the course of his last two seasons at Kansas State. He averaged 5.5 yards per carry in his college career while also being used as a weapon in the passing game.
“His feet are as quick – you want to compare him to Barry Sanders, fine, he’s not Barry Sanders but he’s got tremendous feet,” Baldinger continued. “He can find daylight on the move. He’s always going forward.
“There’s not a lot of pop there when he hits somebody but he makes people miss in a very short space. His footwork, his feet are two-foot stops, cuts, daylight, he knows how to find it. He’s just fun to watch.”
Vaughn was definitely fun to watch in the preseason opener as he racked up 50 yards on eight carries, including a four-yard touchdown run. He also made three catches for six yards through the air.
Tony Pollard is going to be the starting running back but Vaughn is emerging as a potential weapon for the Cowboys.
