Dallas Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones is feeling "more optimistic" about Rico Dowdle's hip injury less than 24 hours after the backup running back left Sunday's 38-3 win over the Patriots early.
Dowdle suffered the injury in the second quarter and never returned to the contest. There was concern Sunday when the team announced that Dowdle had suffered an injury to the same hip that he fractured in 2021, causing him to miss the entire season.
When speaking to reporters after the game, Dowdle attempted to explain how the injury occurred.
“I’ve got to go watch it,” Dowdle said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t know if I fell on it or if I got hit, took a helmet to it. One of the two. It felt like I took a helmet to it. ... I don’t think it’s something too bad. I’ll probably be out a couple days, maybe a couple weeks. We’ll see the severity of it.”
Dowdle was scheduled to undergo an MRI on the hip Monday morning, and based on Jones' comments, it appears as if they got good news.
"We're more optimistic than we were yesterday. So that's a good sign. We were worried that he might have re-injured that hip. I think he does have a hip contusion, but hopefully it's not the severity of the one he had a couple of years ago," Jones said Monday on the K&C Masterpiece on 105.3 The Fan.
Should Dowdle miss any time, Jones said the Cowboys would call-up practice squad running back Malik Davis to the active roster.
