Disgruntled 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel has told ESPN's Jeff Darlington that he wants a trade. Darlington reported the news via Twitter on Wednesday.
It seems that Deebo is upset the 49ers won't be able to meet his contract demands as he's eligible for an extension this offseason following one of the most impressive individual offensive seasons in NFL history. Samuel could be seeking about $25 million annually, which seems impossible for the 49ers given their current situation with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his $26.9 million contract on the roster. According to OverTheCap.com, the Niners only have $1.55 million in cap room.
Including the postseason, Deebo racked up 16 total touchdowns, 87 catches, 1,559 receiving yards and 502 rushing yards. His 18.2 yards per reception was tops in the league. His eight rushing touchdowns in the regular season were an NFL record for a wide receiver, as he was used in the backfield following a rash of injuries.
Other premiere wideouts like Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams and Stefon Diggs have locked in big contracts this offseason. Samuel is due to make $4.9 million next season under his current deal.
Samuel has been linked to the Miami Dolphins in rumors this offseason, as former offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is now the head coach. Miami has $20.2 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap.
If Jimmy G is on the roster in Week 1 and Samuel isn't, that would be a huge blunder for general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan this offseason.
