Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby is stepping aside after a decade of leading the conference, the conference announced Tuesday.

The announcement came one day after the Big 12's Kansas Jayhawks won the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship.

Bowlsby was hired in 2012, not long after the departure of four founding members of the conference: Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado and Texas A&M.

In the past year, Bowlsby has been faced with the defections of two more powerhouses -- Texas and Oklahoma -- who plan to move to the SEC.

Texas Tech President Lawrence Schovanec is president of the Big 12 board of directors. He said they would like to have a new commissioner selected within three months.
