DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Mavericks will release fan favorite J.J. Barea, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reports.

Barea's release comes after he signed a one-year, $2.6 million deal last week. Per MacMahon, owner Mark Cuban gave Barea the contract as a reward for his 11 years with the organization.

His release isn't completely surprising as the team had 16 guaranteed contracts on the roster. A roster that just so happens to include a plethora of guards.

MacMahon reports that Barea's intention is to play this season at age 36.

Barea averaged 7.7 points and 3.9 assists, while playing 15.5 minutes per in 29 games last season.
