The Texas Rangers reportedly made a blockbuster trade on Saturday, sending longtime shortstop Elvis Andrus to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for slugger Khris Davis and a handful of prospects, according to multiple reports.
In addition to Andrus, the A's will receive catching prospect Aramis Garcia, while in addition to Davis, the Rangers will receive catcherJonah Heim, and right-handed pitcher Dane Acker. There will also be cash considerations exchanged in the deal.
Andrus, who is under contract through the 2022 season, is due to earn $28.5 million over the next two seasons.
Andrus also held 10-and-5 rights to veto the trade but declined to exercise those rights. 10-and-5 rights are awarded to players who have accrued 10 years of Major League service time and spent the past five consecutive years with the same team.
Davis, who signed a new two-year contract extension in 2019 with Oakland, will be a free agent at the end of the 2021, and is due to make $13.75 million next season.
The 33-year-old played three seasons with Milwaukee before joining the A's in 2016. In his time with Oakland, Davis became known as a "Rangers killer," mashing 32 of his 158 home runs against Texas. For his career, he has .240 batting average with 218 home runs.
Davis has struggled at the plate over the past two seasons. In 2019, he hit 23 home runs and 73 RBI after posting three consecutive seasons of at least 40 home runs and 100 RBI. Davis only had two home runs and 10 RBI in 2020, but he only played in 30 of his team's 60 games (shortened season due to COVID-19).
"Oakland has been a special place for me since I arrived," Davis said following his extension. "I love playing here in front of our fans, and my teammates make this feel like a family. I never hid the fact that I wanted to stay in Oakland because that is how I feel and I'm glad that I can continue to call the city of Oakland my baseball home. This team has a bright future, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it."
