The Celtics need a new coach following Wednesday's news that Danny Ainge is stepping down as president of basketball operations and Brad Stevens will be transitioning into that role.
A few names have already emerged as potential candidates, with Yahoo's Chris Haynes reporting that Jason Kidd and Lloyd Pierce are expected to be candidates.
Stadium's Jeff Goodman adds that the Celtics could look at Juwan Howard, while the Boston Herald's Mark Murphy mentions Chauncey Billups as a "name to keep in mind."
Kidd, whose Hall of Fame playing career came to an end in 2013, is currently an assistant coach with the Lakers, a role he has held since 2019. He was previously a head coach for the Nets from 2013-14 and the Bucks from 2014-18.
Pierce was head coach of the Hawks from 2018 until this March, when he was fired after Atlanta started the season with a 14-20 record. He was previously an assistant with the Cavaliers, Warriors, Grizzlies and 76ers.
Howard is currently the head coach at the University of Michigan, where he was named both the Big Ten and Associated Press Coach of the Year this past season after leading the Wolverines to a regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. He was previously an assistant coach with the Miami Heat from 2013-19.
Billups, who was drafted by the Celtics in 1997 but then traded during his rookie season, is currently an assistant coach with the Clippers. This is his first season in any sort of coaching role after previously serving as an ESPN analyst for several years.
A popular name among Celtics fans on Twitter is Becky Hammon, who has been an assistant coach with the Spurs since 2014. She would be the first woman to be an NBA head coach if it were to happen, but it's worth noting there have not yet been any real reports linking her to Boston.
