Ben Roethlisberger has made a career out of gutting it out through injuries, but his left knee that he hurt against the Cowboys in Week 9 is starting to become a lingering issue.
According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, Roethlisberger’s left knee, which flared up a few weeks back, has become a “source of greater concern within the Steelers organization.” In particular, Roethlisberger’s knee may be limiting his mobility at a time when the Steelers have ramped up their passing attack like no other team in the league.
The 38-year-old quarterback entered Sunday with a league-high 484 passing attempts, including 196 pass attempts in the last four weeks – 10 more than any other team.
Per La Canfora, Roethlisberger has been granted wide autonomy to change plays at the line of scrimmage as he sees fit, which has some worried within the franchise. The team hopes to limit the amount of times Roethlisberger has to drop back this week against the Buffalo Bills with the return of center Maurkice Pouncey and running back James Conner.
The team’s up-tempo passing attack, in which Roethlisberg gets rid of the ball quickly, has also become predictable, according to La Canfora.
The Steelers lost their first game of the season last week to Washington, after Roethlisberger threw the ball 53 times. According to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Steelers quarterback’s stiff knee caused him to be questionable heading into the game.
Roethlisberger was on the injury report again this week, but was designated as “not injury related.” He practiced fully on Thursday and Friday.
