Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was the driving force behind a very high-powered offense. He was on pace for a record-setting campaign, with 1,690 yards and nine passing touchdowns, in addition to three rushing scores, through four games. Though the Cowboys' defense made it hard for Prescott to lead his team to wins so far in his 2020 campaign, Dallas's offense entered Week 5 as the third highest-scoring unit and had gained the most yards of any team in the NFL. He was also a well-respected leader, a prominent locker room voice and a budding face of the league.
So when he went down to a gruesome, scary-looking injury against the New York Giants on Sunday, the very last word I would have used to describe the unfortunate occurrence may have been "blessing."
Hall of Fame NFL coach and analyst Tony Dungy called the injury just that, though, following the game on NBC.
"As tough as this is for Dak Prescott, it might be a blessing in disguise for the Cowboys," Dungy said. "They've got a good veteran quarterback who can make some plays, and this might cause them to get back to their old formula. Lean on the running game, lean on Ezekiel Elliott, help that defense out by controlling the ball. You've still got wide receivers, and Andy Dalton is going to make some plays with those receivers."
Some users on Twitter, including the popular football news account @MySportsUpdate, seemed to give Dungy the benefit of the doubt and label it as a slip of the tongue, or a way to see the glass half-full.
Others, however, did not see it the same way.
Dungy then took to Twitter to explain his choice of words and acknowledge that he had misspoken.
The overwhelming majority of reactions to Prescott's injury showed an outpouring of support and well-wishes for the Cowboys quarterback.
