Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is getting left out in the cold this hiring cycle.
According to multiple reports, McCarthy has decided not to coach in the NFL in the 2025 season. But was it his choice or was the decision to not coach next season made for him?
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero framed the story as if McCarthy decided he wanted to take a break after his contract wasn't renewed with the Dallas Cowboys after five seasons at the helm.
"Former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy has decided to focus on the 2026 hiring cycle and will not coach in the NFL this season, sources tell me and Ian Rapoport," Pelissero wrote on X.
McCarthy was viewed as one of the top candidates for the New Orleans Saints' head coaching position. However, it appears that he might have lost out to his former offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore, for the job. According to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, McCarthy "did not garner the interest from the Saints that he anticipated - and it’s starting to seem like Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is the leader in the clubhouse in New Orleans."
Schultz added that McCarthy saw the writing on the wall and backed out "before being shutout."
