Last Friday, Chance Smith of Bedford and his friends were outside playing when his toy helicopter ended up on the roof of his apartment complex.
Chance's mother Heather explained, "Every time they tried to fly it, they'd fly it to the ground - or it was just not working. I thought let me save the day. Let me get this thing off the ground. No. I got it off the ground, straight on top of the apartment building."
Heather describes herself as a "problem solver," and immediately sprung into action to get the toy helicopter off the roof. Unfortunately, the apartment complex's maintenance crew had left for the evening, so Heather decided to try the Bedford fire department.
She called the non-emergency line explaining her situation, and to her surprise, they told her "We'll be there in five minutes." Lt. Darren Cook and two other firefighters immediately headed to the apartment complex, got out their ladder, and retrieved the helicopter from the roof.
Gracious for the Bedford FD, Heather saw this also as an event to teach Chance a valuable lesson that firefighters are there to help with any emergency big or small. She said, "The fire department can be full of macho men, alpha, paramilitary-type people, and, they think they're tough and stuff and a little kid looks at them, 'Can you get my toy down from the roof?' And it's, 'Yeah buddy, we can. We'll get it down for ya.' I don't know one fireman that'll say, 'Nope you're on your own buddy."
