We are living in the golden age of food trucks. There are few things better than spending an afternoon at Klyde Warren Park with the myriad of food truck options that provide something every member of the family can enjoy.
In a new initiative, Dallas ISD is providing students with a hands-on experience of operating a food truck, by giving them their own.
“Curbside Delights” was created in partnership with TurboTax parent company Intuit, with the goal of providing students the opportunity to learn what it takes to run a food truck, everything from the technical operations to manning the grill.
To start, the truck will begin service at the three schools that have culinary arts, business, and graphic design programs, Molina, Bryan Adams, and Skyline, with eventual expansion to another six schools.
Curbside Delights will travel from campus to campus across the district, staying at each school from three to four weeks at a time. Then, the truck will later branch out to other parts of Dallas County, including high school games and special events.
Jason Hamilton, the district’s career and technical education coordinator, says each school will feature its own menu, with the food completely prepared by culinary students. Business students will handle marketing, point-of-sale operations, and budget management, and graphic design students will design the menus and promotional materials.
According to D Magazine, Curbside Delights is expected to be fully functional for the 2024-2025 school year.
