In a statement posted to LinkedIn from co-founder and CEO Luis von Ahn, Duolingo is making major artificial intelligence backed changes.

Von Ahn compared the decision to Duolingo's mobile-first push in 2012, rather than creating an app as a companion to a website, as the catalyst for a portion of it's success. Adding, "Betting on mobile made all the difference. We're making a similar call now, and this time the platform shift is AI."

"We need to create a massive amount of content, and doing that manually doesn't scale," added von Ahn. Further mentioning that AI tools enhanced what was before a, "slow, manual creation process."

As a part of this "AI first" approach the company is planning to gradually stop using contractors to do work AI can handle. Duolingo will also be leaning on AI for performance reviews, parts of their hiring process, automating or changing how the company tackles work, and helping build features like 'Video Call.'

Von Ahn also expressed care for their employees, mentioning the changes are not intended to replace "Duos", but to "remove bottlenecks" and do more with their existing workforce.
