FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD)- Legendary Fort Worth oil-and-gas billionaire and philanthropist Tex Moncrief has died -- at the age of 101.
Born in Fort Worth in 1920, Moncrief grew up in a wildcatting family led by his dad Monty Moncrief who brought in a Gregg County gusher in 1931 -- witnessed by the young Tex and which ignited his passion for the oil-and-gas business.
Graduating from UT in 1942, Moncrief wheeled and dealed all his life. Coming back from the service after World War Two, he joined his father in a 50-50 partnership to form Moncrief oil.
In 2006, Forbes added him to its list of billionaires. With that money, he became a leading philanthropist, donating 100s of millions of dollars to fund medical care, education and other charitable causes.
He donated $100 million dollars to UT Southwestern Medical Center where the Moncrief Cancer Institute is named for Moncrief and his father.
Tex Moncrief was a founding member of the Shady Oaks Country Club in Fort Worth and a close friend of Ben Hogan. He was also the uncle of Mike Moncrief, mayor of Fort Worth from 2003 to 2011.
